The usual response period is seven business days after the custodian receives a complete OPRA request. That is not a promise that every record will arrive within seven days. Commercial requests and records needing Daniel’s Law review generally have a fourteen-business-day period, with notice of the extra time within seven business days. Other exceptions include certain election records, emergencies, and some small fire districts. A custodian may also seek an extension. Check the GRC’s current guidance before calculating your deadline.

What to do next

Compare your request with the GRC’s listed exceptions and check any extension notice from the custodian.
