Find your town’s OPRA instructions and send a written request to the agency that holds the records. The municipal clerk is ordinarily the town’s records custodian, although separate custodians may handle particular records, such as police records. Use the agency’s OPRA form or an equivalent written request that invokes OPRA and includes the required information. Describe the records you want clearly. The Government Records Council does not hold every agency’s records and cannot fulfill another agency’s request.

What to do next

Find the municipality’s OPRA page and identify the correct custodian before submitting.
