Most New Jersey drivers can renew online, even when their renewal notice says to visit an agency. MVC says an online renewal takes effect immediately, and you can print a receipt while the new license arrives by mail. Update your address first if it has changed. Commercial-license holders and people whose visas are expiring need an in-person appointment. If the online service finds you ineligible, book a renewal visit. MVC mails licenses even after an in-person renewal.
