What Happened in the Jersey City Acid Attack That Injured Five Women?

The incident sent five women to the hospital and has produced no arrests as of Tuesday.

Five women were burned with sulfuric acid on Monday evening outside a narrow brick-and-siding rowhouse on a Jersey City street that has already seen a killing.

The attack happened around 7 p.m. near 105 Wilkinson Avenue in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood. The house sits in a tight row of attached homes, its brick lower facade and pale upper siding passing into shadow as the sun sets. Overhead the power lines crisscross the narrow street. Trash bins sit between the tightly spaced houses at the curb.

Two individuals pulled up and threw the chemical. All five victims went to a local hospital with burns and skin peeling. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Cops are still looking for the suspects as of Tuesday morning.

The timing is brutal. Six days earlier, a woman and two children were hit by a tractor-trailer at Wilkinson and Ocean Avenues, just a few hundred feet from number 105.

And the block has history. In 2021, a 21-year-old was shot and killed on Wilkinson near Martin Luther King Drive. A local publication called the street one of the most dangerous stretches in the city.

There is a live conflict in the preliminary accounts. Jersey City police told ABC7 the suspects were in a vehicle. Mayor James Solomon told News12 they were on a moped. NBC News also reported the moped detail. The discrepancy had not been resolved by Tuesday morning.

Victims Reported Stable; No Arrests Made

All five women were in stable condition at the hospital. Police have not released their names or the hospital where they were treated. Hazmat crews were called to the scene to handle the substance.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon condemned the attack in a statement released Tuesday. “My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets” he said. “I have directed JCPD to use its full resources on the investigation and to ensure that our officers work around the clock to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”

The attack appears to have been targeted. Police said it may have stemmed from a dispute between a large group earlier in the day Monday.

The Jersey City Police Department is investigating the incident. They have released no suspect names or descriptions as of publication. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact JCPD.
