Is a text threatening an MVC penalty for unpaid tolls legitimate?

Practical guidance, useful next steps and official sources for New Jersey residents.

NJBallot Resident Resources

Treat an unsolicited toll-payment text claiming to be from MVC as suspicious. An official February 2026 New Jersey municipal advisory says MVC does not send texts about outstanding toll payments. Do not click the message’s link or reply. Open your toll provider’s official website yourself to check your account, or use contact details from a verified source. You can forward the suspicious text to 7726 and report the activity to the NJ Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell.

What to do next

Verify your account through the toll provider’s official website and use the advisory’s reporting links.
