How do I complain about a New Jersey gas or electric bill or service problem?

Practical guidance, useful next steps and official sources for New Jersey residents.

First contact your utility and explain the billing or service problem. If it remains unresolved, you can complain to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' Division of Customer Assistance online or by phone. BPU handles concerns including high bills, service interruptions, payment arrangements and deposits. Describe what happened when you contacted the utility. For a suspected gas leak, leave the area and call 911 or your utility from a safe location; stay away from fallen wires.

What to do next

Use BPU's official complaint page after contacting your utility; utility complaints can also be made at 800-624-0241.
