Ras J. Baraka is the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, serving
since July 2014. A member of the Democratic Party, Baraka previously served on
the Newark Municipal Council representing the South Ward from 2010 to 2014.
Before entering elected office, Baraka worked as an educator and school
administrator in Newark. He served as principal of Central High School, where
he gained local recognition for his efforts to improve student performance and
expand educational opportunities.
Baraka is the son of the late Amiri Baraka, a poet, playwright, and prominent
political activist. His background in education and community organizing helped
shape his political career in Newark.
