Herbert Conaway, Jr., was born in Trenton in 1963 and raised in Willingboro. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1984, a Doctor of Medicine from Thomas Jefferson University in 1988, and a Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School in Camden.
Conaway served as a Captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps at McGuire Air Force Base. He practiced internal medicine in Burlington County for over two decades.
He entered elective office by serving on the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly for the 7th Legislative District, where he served for 27 years.
In 2024, Conaway ran for the United States House of Representatives to succeed Andy Kim, who was running for the U.S. Senate. He won the Democratic primary against Assemblywoman Carol Murphy and other candidates, then defeated Republican Rajesh Mohan in the general election with 53 percent of the vote. He took office on January 3, 2025, becoming the first Black member of Congress from South Jersey and the first Black physician to serve with voting privileges in Congress.
