Al Barlas is a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 40th Legislative District. He assumed office in January 2024 after winning election in the 2023 general election. 

Barlas has an extensive background in government and political operations. He began his career in Trenton in 2008 as a legislative director and later served as chief of staff to State Senator Kevin O’Toole and State Senator Kristin Corrado. His work in these roles included legislative strategy, policy coordination, and assisting local governments with state-level matters. 

In addition to his legislative and staff experience, Barlas has held leadership roles within the Republican Party. He has served as chairman of the Essex County Republican Committee since 2011 and previously led both the Essex County Young Republicans and the New Jersey Young Republican Federation.  His professional background also includes work as co-administrator and director of marketing for the New Jersey Intergovernmental Insurance Fund.
