Background

Philip D. Murphy is a New Jersey political figure, diplomat, and former governor of New Jersey. He served as the state’s 56th governor from 2018 to 2026. As governor, he oversaw the executive branch of state government, including the implementation of state laws, administration of the state budget, and management of state agencies.

Before entering public office, Murphy spent more than two decades in the financial sector. He worked at Goldman Sachs, where he held senior leadership roles and became a partner at the firm. After leaving Goldman Sachs, he entered public service and diplomacy.

Murphy served as United States Ambassador to Germany from 2009 to 2013 during the administration of President Barack Obama. Following his diplomatic service, he became active in political organizing and public policy initiatives before launching his campaign for governor of New Jersey.
