JERSEY CITY — Jersey City Mayor James Solomon announced the appointment of Loren Hart as Acting Deputy Public Safety Director, placing a longtime Jersey City public safety official into a senior leadership role as the new administration continues to reorganize city government.
The announcement was made through an official video released by the City of Jersey City Mayor’s Office, where Solomon introduced Hart and highlighted his ties to the community.
“Loren Hart grew up on these streets,” Solomon said during the announcement, noting Hart’s longstanding connection to Jersey City and his experience serving the city.
The Deputy Public Safety Director position is part of the city’s leadership structure responsible for coordinating operations within the Jersey City Department of Public Safety, which oversees the police department, fire department, emergency medical services, and other emergency response functions.
As acting deputy director, Hart will assist senior public safety leadership in coordinating department operations, implementing policy initiatives, and supporting citywide public safety strategies.
The appointment is listed as “acting,” indicating the role may be temporary while the administration evaluates long-term leadership positions within the department.
Hart has spent years working within Jersey City’s public safety framework and has built a career within the city’s emergency services leadership structure. During the announcement, Solomon emphasized Hart’s experience and familiarity with Jersey City neighborhoods as important factors in the decision to appoint him to the position.
City officials did not immediately release additional details about the duration of the acting appointment or whether Hart may be considered for the position permanently.
The appointment comes as the Solomon administration continues to make staffing and leadership decisions across municipal government following the transition in city leadership.
Leadership transitions in municipal government often involve changes to department leadership teams as new administrations assemble officials who will oversee policy implementation and daily operations.
Separately, the mayor’s office recently reassigned Phillip Orphanidis, who previously served as deputy chief of staff under former Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.
The reassignment followed renewed public attention surrounding an arrest involving Orphanidis last year. City officials have not publicly indicated that the reassignment is connected to Hart’s appointment within the public safety leadership structure.
City officials have indicated that additional announcements regarding departmental leadership may follow as the Solomon administration continues organizing its leadership team across city agencies.
The Department of Public Safety remains one of the largest operational branches of Jersey City government, responsible for coordinating law enforcement, fire protection, and emergency response services throughout the city.
